Medleri Silk Charkha:

After the successful introduction of Medleri Charkha for wool spinning reputed institutions like Karnataka state sericulture research and development institutes bangalore and development Alternatives have tried and adopted the Medleri Charkha for spinning of non reel able silk waste like pierced cocoon, cook's waste and roller's waste. Suitable adopters for high speed and better twist have been introduced in the silk version.

Design and fabrication of machine:

The machine is very and long operated the 'Medleri Charkha' used for spinning coarse wool has been suitable modified to suit the cut cocoon spinning. A spindle with flyer fixed on the spindle and routed along with the flyer. Spun yarn is twist and wound on to the bobbin automatically with the flyer. The count of the yarn and amount of twist to be given can be controlled easily. The machine has been developed by using easily available material. The machine can be used by rural people without any major maintenance.

Spinning operation:

A. Soaking and preparation:

Cocoons for spinning are taken in an earth pot. Equal quantity for water taken in another pot and every liter to water 5 gm of soda for biotin cocoon and 4 gm of soda for cross breed cocoons is mixed and then poured into the cocoon filled pot. Cut and pierced cocoons are soaked and will be ready for in 4 to 5 days of soaking. If it is not possible to utilized such cocoons on the same day or next 2-3 days. The same can be drived in shade and can be user for spinning after soaking them plain water for one hour.

B. Spinning method:

Soaked cocoons can be used for spinning. In the beginning, filaments from single cocoons are drawn, passed through the flyer hole, thread on flyer and fixed firmly on the bobbin. As show in the adjoining photography. Soaked cocoon should be held tight in the left hand drawn uniformly by the right hand. The yarn produced in clean, lustrous and with minimum amount of naps. Presently there is no effective alternate equipments and method for spinning cut and pierced cocoons.
